 January's Camping Trip
Dec 31, 2011

We know what it's like in the middle of the summer but howe is Camp Cherokee in the middle of the winter? We'll find out when we go there the weekend of January 13th - 15th. We will be staying in the Cheyenne campsite. it's the remote site along the powerlines off of the end of the climbing tower. Why there? because that's where they assigned us and it has running water. Should be interesting.

 February 2012 Trip
Nov 13, 2011

As everyone knows, we try to do a special trip once a year and February 24-26, 2012 will see us going to Williamsburg VA. I wanted to give everyone a head's up so they can begin saving their pennies. It's going to cost $60 per person but that covers 2 nights at the 4H Center in Jamestown in a heated cabin complete with flush toilets and hot showers, all meals Saturday and Sunday breakfast. The Troop is going to spring for the group tickets to tour Colonial Williamsburg - if at least 15 people signup. More details will be coming over the next couple of months

Camping For The Rest of 2011
October 08, 2011

Only a couple of months left in this year. We will be camping at the Bennett Place October 21st - 23rd. This is always a great location because of its nearness. Plan on touring the site and also working on orienteering skills.

November 18th - 20th will see us back at our usual haunt of Lake Michie. What will make this trip special is that we are inviting the parents and siblings to come join us for dinner Saturday evening and stay for the campfire. Sam and Matthew have been working on cleaning up the pig cooker so we can BBQ some pork and we'll also deep fry a turkey.

 Shining Rock Wilderness Backpacking Trip
July 11, 2011

Introduction

The United States Congress designated the Shining Rock Wilderness (map) in 1964 and it now has a total of 18,483 acres. All of this wilderness is located in North Carolina and is managed by the Forest Service. The Shining Rock Wilderness is bordered by the Middle Prong Wilderness to the southwest.

Description

Named for a micaceous rock outcrop, Shining Rock became one of the original components of the National Wilderness Preservation System in September 1964, a few months after garnering designation as a Wild area. It is now the largest Wilderness in North Carolina, separated by only a road from Middle Prong Wilderness to the southwest. Standing at an elevation of more than 5,000 feet and boasting five peaks exceeding 6,000 feet (three within the Wilderness boundaries), Shining Rock Ledge forms the backbone of this area.

Here in this series of high ridges on the north slopes of Pisgah Ridge, you'll find extremely steep and rugged terrain ranging in elevation from 3,200 feet on the banks of the West Fork of Pigeon River, a major tributary of the Tennessee River, to 6,030 feet on Cold Mountain. Streams abound, cutting narrow passages through the mountains on their way to either the East or West Forks of the Pigeon River. Loggers cut down the forest between 1906 and 1926 and fires raged through the area in 1925 and 1942. These two factors account for Shining Rock's grassy "balds" and unique vegetation.

Almost all the trails in the area rate as difficult, and they can be hard to follow. Nevertheless, this Wilderness is one of the most trampled in the state.

Congratulations To Our 2 New OA Brothers
May 22, 2011

Congratulations to Sam and Mark for completing their Ordeal this weekend and becoming members in the Order of the Arrow.

Time to Start Thinking Summer Camp
May 05, 2011

Summer camp is fast approaching. We leave Sunday morning around 11:30 on July 3rd. But before we go, you need to decide what meritbadges or activities you want to sign up for. We'll talk some about it during the troop meetings but if you know what you want and are ready to make choices, here's the online way to tell me what to register you for. Click on Merit Badge Sign-Up and pick your activities.

The form is a Google Doc's form that has enough smarts to know if you pick a class that spans more than one session then it will jump to the next available session for the next pick. I will be checking the underlying database a couple of times a day and will transfer your choices to the camp's registration system. Pay attention to the prerequesites and age limits for some of the badges.

The sooner you are able to decide what you want, the more likely you are to get those choices.

 Camping at Lake Michie
February 02, 2011

Our next camping trip has been moved to Lake Michie to give us some room and to give the Bennett Place a little more time to forget the damage we did last time. This is the annual trip where we invite the Webelos II's to join us to get ready for their transition to Boy Scouts.

We'll meet at the church on Saturday morning February 12th at 9am and then head over. Plan to be back Sunday around 10am.

 Congratulations
January 26, 2011

Congratulations to our new Senior Patrol Leader Justin and Asst Senior Patrol Leader Chris A. Your peers belive you are the best ones to lead them and I concur.

Patrol Leaders and APL's were also selected by their patrols. The Rubber Duckies PL is now Matt with Walker as the APL. The Blackhawks selected James S. as their new PL and Jack will fill the role of APL. The Electric Cowbells felt that Chris S. and Ben did such a good job the previous 6 months that they have been voted in again. Congratulations everyone.

 Snow Tubing
January 21, 2011

I know you were dissapointed that we didn't get to go snow tubing as planned. Unfortunately the weather where we were going was bad and getting worse. For everyone's safety we had to call off the trip. But, that doesn't mean we won't go. We'll just pick a different date in the next month or so and go. Stay tuned.

 Troop Elections
January 21, 2011

On January 24thth we'll hold elections for Senior Patrol Leader, Asst Senior Patrol Leader, and Patrol Leaders. Troop Leader Training will be Saturday Feb 5th.

 Troop Elections
December 22, 2010

On January 10th we'll be holding elections for Senior Patrol Leader, Asst Senior Patrol Leader, and Patrol Leaders. Look at the job responsibilities and think about who you want leading you. The SPL and ASPL are a year-long position and requires dedication to the troop and Scouting ideals.

If you are at least a First Class Scout with previoous PL or APL experience and are interested in being the SPL or ASPL then send me an email stating your interest.

 Snow Tubing
December 14, 2010

Anyone interested in a snow tubing day trip? We went snow tubing a couple of years ago and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The PLC was hoping to do it again. I've checked on Hawk's Nest and Jonas Ridge and there is a bit of a price difference as well as the amount of slide time.

Hawk's Nest does not have any group rates on Saturdays which means the price would be $32 per person for 1 hour 45 minutes on the slopes. If we went on a Sunday the price for a group of 12 drops to $25 per person.

Jonas Ridge is near Morganton but driving time is about the same as Hawk's Nest (3.5 hours one way). They offer 2 hour sessions for $25 per person or $20 per person with a group of 15.

We would eat a fast food lunch on the way up as well as dinner on the way back, figure around $6 a meal if you eat cheap. This makes the trip cost around $35 to $45 per person.

So think about it during the Christmas break and let me know if this is something you want to do and can afford.

Court of Honor and Christmas Party
November 14, 2010

On December 13th the troop will hold a Court of Honor followed by our traditional Christmas party. In the next couple of weeks we'll decide who is bring what refreshments and if we want to do the Dirty Santa gift exchange like previous years or something else. After this night we won't meet again until January 3rd.

 December Activity: Movie Night Marathon
November 14, 2010

Since there isn't a good weekend to go camping in December, we'll hold our 2nd annual all night movie marathon the night of Decemeber 11th in the basement of the church. Like last year we'll watch a variety of movies and take breaks by playing some outdoor games in the dark. Bring a sleeping bag but sleep is optional.

It is the largest Boy Scout Council in North Carolina and serves Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Moore, Orange, Vance, Wake and Warren counties.  McMannen Fall Festival
September 17, 2010

Scout Law #3: A Scout is HELPFUL

Saturday, October 3rd is the annual McMannen Fall Festival. Traditionally, as a way of saying thank you to the church for providing us with a place to meet and the use of the bus/van, we have helped set-up on Friday evening and helped clean-up the yard sale stuff on Saturday afternoon. It never takes us long maybe a hour to a hour and a half on Friday and the same on Saturday. The time you spend helping counts as service hours. For 2nd Class you need 1 hour and for Star and Life you need 6 hours.

So won't you please volunteer to help to say thank you and earn those service hours?

OA Ordeal & Brotherhood at Fall Fellowship
August 13, 2010

For those who haven't completed their Ordeal or want to persue their Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow, the weekend of September 17-19 is Fall Fellowship for the Occoneechee Council at Camp Durant. I will be driving down Friday afternoon and will happily take others wishing to go.

September Campout to Hanging Rock State Park
July 24, 2010 (updated 09/08/10)

Permission form for the trip

Tried to get us into Carolina Beach State Park but the 2 group areas were reserved. Instead we'll go to Hanging Rock State Park September 10-12. We'll be able to view the exhibit hall and hike to the famous Hanging Rock as well as some waterfalls. If the lake is still open for swimming we'll do that as well.

Here's the history blurb:

One of the most easterly mountain ranges in the state, the Sauratown Mountains are often called "the mountains away from the mountains" because they are separated from the nearby Blue Ridge Mountains. Prominent peaks in the Sauratown range rise from 1,700 feet to more than 2,500 feet in elevation and stand in bold contrast to the surrounding countryside, which averages only 800 feet in elevation.

Named for the Saura Indians who were early inhabitants of the region, the Sauratown Mountains are the remnants of a once-mighty range of peaks. Over many millions of years, wind, water and other forces wore down the lofty peaks. What remains of these ancient mountains is the erosion-resistant quartzite, which now supports scenic ridges and knobs, including Moore's Knob, Moore's Wall, Cook's Wall, Devil's Chimney, Wolf Rock and Hanging Rock.

PLC Bi-Annual Planning and Leadership Training Campout
July 17, 2010

This will be our first ever troop leader training combined with our bi-annual program planning meeting. The PLC will camp at Lake Michie August 20-22. Food will be provided by Mr Anderle which means all PLC members will eat Nacho style!

We'll eat, have some fun, learn what each leadership position's responsibilities are and what it takes to become an effective leader. Since Boy Scouts is a boy-led program, we'll also plan the next 7 months of meetings and outings.

So put the date on your calendar and prepare to bring some ideas of what you want out of the troop program.
