If you haven't already read where we are going in February, then check the February 2012 Trip news item below. This is going to be a great trip. Not only will we get to see Colonial Williamsburg, stay in a warm cabin, but we will be finishing up the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge. We are ready to start collecting money for the trip. bring it any time between now and February 20th. Remember, $60 covers 2 nights lodging, all meals Saturday, and breakfast Sunday.
We know what it's like in the middle of the summer but howe is Camp Cherokee in the middle of the winter? We'll find out when we go there the weekend of January 13th - 15th. We will be staying in the Cheyenne campsite. it's the remote site along the powerlines off of the end of the climbing tower. Why there? because that's where they assigned us and it has running water. Should be interesting.
As everyone knows, we try to do a special trip once a year and February 24-26, 2012 will see us going to Williamsburg VA. I wanted to give everyone a head's up so they can begin saving their pennies. It's going to cost $60 per person but that covers 2 nights at the 4H Center in Jamestown in a heated cabin complete with flush toilets and hot showers, all meals Saturday and Sunday breakfast. The Troop is going to spring for the group tickets to tour Colonial Williamsburg - if at least 15 people signup. More details will be coming over the next couple of months
Alan completed all his requirements for his Eagle rank and sucessfully sat for his Board of Review. This officially makes him an Eagle Scout.
We have some congratulations in order for individuals who achieved special recognition. Sam has completed all his requirements for his Eagle rank and sucessfully sat for his Board of Review. This officially makes him an Eagle Scout. Daniel has completed the OA Brotherhood Trail and is now a Brotherhood member of the OA. Patrol Leader elections were held Sepember 26th and our new Patrol Leaders are Jacob for the Rubber Duckies with Hunter as the APL, Daniel for the Electric Cowbells with Ben as APL, and James S. retains his Patrol Leader position for the Blackhawks with Benjamin as APL.
Only a couple of months left in this year. We will be camping at the Bennett Place October 21st - 23rd. This is always a great location because of its nearness. Plan on touring the site and also working on orienteering skills.
For those who want to persue their Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow, the weekend of September 16-18 is Fall Fellowship for the Occoneechee Council at Camp Durant. I will be driving down Friday afternoon and will happily take others wishing to go.
Description
Here in this series of high ridges on the north slopes of Pisgah Ridge, you'll find extremely steep and rugged terrain ranging in elevation from 3,200 feet on the banks of the West Fork of Pigeon River, a major tributary of the Tennessee River, to 6,030 feet on Cold Mountain. Streams abound, cutting narrow passages through the mountains on their way to either the East or West Forks of the Pigeon River. Loggers cut down the forest between 1906 and 1926 and fires raged through the area in 1925 and 1942. These two factors account for Shining Rock's grassy "balds" and unique vegetation. Almost all the trails in the area rate as difficult, and they can be hard to follow. Nevertheless, this Wilderness is one of the most trampled in the state.
Congratulations to Sam and Mark for completing their Ordeal this weekend and becoming members in the Order of the Arrow.
Summer camp is fast approaching. We leave Sunday morning around 11:30 on July 3rd. But before we go, you need to decide what meritbadges or activities you want to sign up for. We'll talk some about it during the troop meetings but if you know what you want and are ready to make choices, here's the online way to tell me what to register you for. Click on Merit Badge Sign-Up and pick your activities.

Our next camping trip has been moved to Lake Michie to give us some room and to give the Bennett Place a little more time to forget the damage we did last time. This is the annual trip where we invite the Webelos II's to join us to get ready for their transition to Boy Scouts.
Congratulations to our new Senior Patrol Leader Justin and Asst Senior Patrol Leader Chris A. Your peers belive you are the best ones to lead them and I concur.
• If you haven't already done so, please remember to bring your dues in. We have to turn in our charter renewal before the end of February • Michael Pratt's Eagle Court of Honor is going to be held Monday January 31st. Be there to help honor and celebrate this big acomplishment.
The next trip is coming up. Our annual Webelos invited trip. Details to follow.
I know you were dissapointed that we didn't get to go snow tubing as planned. Unfortunately the weather where we were going was bad and getting worse. For everyone's safety we had to call off the trip. But, that doesn't mean we won't go. We'll just pick a different date in the next month or so and go. Stay tuned.
On January 24thth we'll hold elections for Senior Patrol Leader, Asst Senior Patrol Leader, and Patrol Leaders. Troop Leader Training will be Saturday Feb 5th.
On January 10th we'll be holding elections for Senior Patrol Leader, Asst Senior Patrol Leader, and Patrol Leaders. Look at the job responsibilities and think about who you want leading you. The SPL and ASPL are a year-long position and requires dedication to the troop and Scouting ideals.
Anyone interested in a snow tubing day trip? We went snow tubing a couple of years ago and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The PLC was hoping to do it again. I've checked on Hawk's Nest and Jonas Ridge and there is a bit of a price difference as well as the amount of slide time.
On December 13th the troop will hold a Court of Honor followed by our traditional Christmas party. In the next couple of weeks we'll decide who is bring what refreshments and if we want to do the Dirty Santa gift exchange like previous years or something else. After this night we won't meet again until January 3rd.
Since there isn't a good weekend to go camping in December, we'll hold our 2nd annual all night movie marathon the night of Decemeber 11th in the basement of the church. Like last year we'll watch a variety of movies and take breaks by playing some outdoor games in the dark. Bring a sleeping bag but sleep is optional.

Next month we'll go to Camp Cherokee and take advantage of having the camp to ourselves. Better brush up on your orienteering skills becasue I have a course planned that will use your compass and mapping reading skills. We'll also, finally, shoot the rockets. I bet you guys can come up with a great wide area game. All this is the weekend of November 5th - 7th.
Michael and I will be hold Troop Leadership Training Saturday from 9am to 1pm at the scout hut for the new PL's and APL's. This is a mandatory training for those who hold postions of responsibility.
The plan is to leave from McMannan around 5pm on Friday and return around 11am Sunday. The weather is going to be perfect: mid 70's during the day and low 50's at night.
Congratulations to Daniel for successfully completing his OA Ordeal!
Saturday, October 3rd is the annual McMannen Fall Festival. Traditionally, as a way of saying thank you to the church for providing us with a place to meet and the use of the bus/van, we have helped set-up on Friday evening and helped clean-up the yard sale stuff on Saturday afternoon. It never takes us long maybe a hour to a hour and a half on Friday and the same on Saturday. The time you spend helping counts as service hours. For 2nd Class you need 1 hour and for Star and Life you need 6 hours. So won't you please volunteer to help to say thank you and earn those service hours?
For those who haven't completed their Ordeal or want to persue their Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow, the weekend of September 17-19 is Fall Fellowship for the Occoneechee Council at Camp Durant. I will be driving down Friday afternoon and will happily take others wishing to go.
Permission form for the trip Here's the history blurb:
This will be our first ever troop leader training combined with our bi-annual program planning meeting. The PLC will camp at Lake Michie August 20-22. Food will be provided by Mr Anderle which means all PLC members will eat Nacho style! We'll eat, have some fun, learn what each leadership position's responsibilities are and what it takes to become an effective leader. Since Boy Scouts is a boy-led program, we'll also plan the next 7 months of meetings and outings. So put the date on your calendar and prepare to bring some ideas of what you want out of the troop program.
